2019-12-21T19:20:02.727Z

Bad weather conditions prevail in large parts of Germany, Austria and Italy. A plane crashed on Grossglocknerstrasse, and a driver died in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region.

When a small plane crashed in Austria, the German pilot died on Saturday. As the Austrian news agency APA reported, citing the Red Cross, his nine and eleven-year-old daughters had also been in the machine. The children survived the accident in Salzburg's Pinzgau, but were injured and taken to hospitals in Zell am See and Schwarzach.

According to the report, the crash occurred in Fusch on Glocknerstrasse in the Zell am See district. The fire brigade, the mountain rescue service and the Red Cross initially had difficulty finding the wreck. "It is in the middle of the forest," said Red Cross operations manager Anton Voithofer, according to the "Salzburger Nachrichten". In addition, snow, rain and thick fog obstructed the view.

Heavy snow and rainfalls also caused a chaos in Italy and cost at least one person's life. A motorist in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in the northeast of the country was killed when he drove his car on a flooded road closed to traffic, the Ansa news agency reported on Saturday.

Venice with a flood of 120 centimeters

The man was still able to call emergency services, but was later dragged into the water with his car. The fire brigade could only save him dead.

In Venice, the flood on Saturday morning was 120 centimeters above normal sea level. This means that around 30 percent of the city was under water. On Sunday and Monday, the flood should rise to 130 centimeters and cover almost half of the city.

The lagoon city is still suffering from the aftermath of the catastrophic flood, which flooded almost the entire historic center on November 12 and caused enormous damage. At that time, the water had risen to 187 centimeters above normal sea level.

The capricious weather also paralyzed the Alpine Ski World Cup on Saturday. After the cancellation of the men's downhill in Val Gardena due to snow, rain and fog as well as the unfavorable forecast for the rest of the day, the International Ski Association FIS also announced the cancellation of the downhill of the women in Val d'Isere / France in late Saturday morning: in the high Savoys it had snowed heavily again overnight.
