(ANSA) - SANTA MARIA DI LEUCA (LECCE), DECEMBER 22 - Thirty-three migrants were rescued during the night on the coast of Santa Maria di Leuca. They are 21 Iranians, 10 Iraqis and two Ukrainians. Among them also a woman and two children aged 14 and 15. The sailboat they were traveling on ran aground on the cliff on the Cristoforo Colombo promenade in Leuca. Some immigrants were rescued by the Guardia di Finanza, others were tracked down on the mainland.
Rescuers were told they had been on the road for 7 days.
They were all without footwear, in an evident state of hypothermia, tried by the crossing. Someone has minor injuries and was treated on the spot; one migrant was hospitalized for investigation. On the spot also Caritas and representatives of the Municipality of Castrignano del Capo who provided material and logistical support during the reception operations.
