Portuguese was preferred to other candidates: Lionel Messi, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah. "It is a great honor, I hope to be here again next year. I thank those who voted for me and wish everyone a happy new year." The ceremony also saw his teammate, Mjralem Pjanic, rewarded with a lifetime achievement award.
