If you were looking for another benefit for your childhood memories of the afternoon with the guys from the neighborhood, away from home and without screens, a new study found it: four out of five children who participated in the study testified that playing outside was socially beneficial to them

How do we like to linger on our childhood memories, when we spend the afternoons around the neighborhood with the other kids at games or exciting adventures in the surrounding woods, and come home only after parents called us to dinner (shouting out the window, of course, who had a cell phone?) And, no less, we enjoy chuckling at our kids who just want to be in front of screens and explain to them repeatedly how playing outside will open up their fitness, health, imagination and social skills.

And we're not wrong. Our kids spend far less hours outside, that's a fact. A survey conducted in Britain a few years ago stated that children in the country spend less time outdoors than prison inmates. Research shows that when children do not play outside, it significantly impairs their physical activity, resulting in their health - from weight gain to myopia (myopia) and attention deficit and sensory disorders. A recent study published by Wildlife Trusts of the Wildlife Trusts shows another benefit for outdoor play - increasing children's sense of security.

As part of the British organization's study, which included 451 English children, the researchers conducted a children's survey before embarking on outdoor and post-activity activities, seeking changes in their self-confidence. The results showed that most children find that time outside is useful on multiple fronts. For example, 90 percent of children said they learned something new about nature and 79 percent felt they had learned something that could help them move on in school. About 80 percent of children reported better relationships with their teachers and classmates after they were out.

A particularly gratifying finding from the polls was that 84 percent of children felt they could do new things after participating in outdoor activities. "The study shows that children experience deep and varied benefits through regular contact with nature. Connecting with nature improves their well-being, motivation and confidence," concluded Nigel Post, the organization's strategy director.

How do we make kids play more outdoors?

The researchers took into account the fact that not all children have the same access to nature, and made sure to note how important the role of schools is in providing the opportunity to do so. "For some children, visiting nature through the school may provide opportunities that they would not otherwise have been able to obtain," said Mail, adding that he hopes the research findings will encourage schools to allocate more time for recreation in a more natural environment.

And as in most cases, our children's education will be greatly influenced by the personal example given to them. If you want to boost their self-confidence, or just spend quality time with them, find ways to expose them more to nature - it doesn't have to be a trek in the mountains, even a large playground, park, forest or beach will suffice. Let them run, climb, experiment and explore, get dirty, rave, establish secret gangs, or imagine they're superheroes on a mission. And if there is no nearby space, you can even limit their screen hours and suggest they take advantage of that time for ball games in the neighborhood court with friends. Maybe in the future, they too will remember those moments and wish them on, to their children.
