The Food Products Marking Act comes into effect today, and from now on, any product containing high-fat, high-sugar or high-sodium sodium will be marked in red. Will it make us eat healthier food? New research at the Heart Academic Center shows that despite increased awareness, the majority of the public does not eat healthy food and the phenomenon of obesity is only expanding. Awareness, therefore, is not expected to lead to a major change in consumption.

The researchers looked at 200 people's perceptions, attitudes and behaviors regarding eating healthy food products. They found that there is a very high awareness of the importance of eating healthy foods (94%) and that a vast majority of respondents (91%) responded that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential to maintaining health. In addition, about 83% of participants expressed a preference for purchasing a health-defined product and 86% agreed that changing eating habits was necessary.

The data shows that there is a growing awareness among the public of maintaining a proper diet and healthy lifestyle. But it turns out that awareness is not everything. Despite the magnitude of the change in consciousness, in practice, almost nothing has changed. Most respondents remain unbalanced with dietary habits, the majority eat unhealthy foods and the phenomenon of obesity continues.

The study found that only 24% of participants said they regularly consumed health products, which is very similar to those measured in the United States. Among the American public, health issues are high relative to other Western countries, but the opposite is true - Americans do not maintain a healthy diet. Studies conducted among Europeans eating healthy foods have suggested that they do so for a variety of reasons, seeking mental balance, dietary diversity or refreshing the menu. In other words, most of the time, they do it out of awareness of the health issue.

One of the reasons for the discrepancy between high awareness and low consumption is due to the relatively high costs of health food compared to other foods. The study found that 63% of respondents stated that they did not find a justification to pay a higher price for healthy foods and that they preferred to buy the cheaper and more affordable product, rather than the healthy product. Another reason is the difficulty in changing habits. About two-thirds (67%) stated that they were very interested in maintaining a healthier lifestyle, but were having difficulty changing their lifestyle.

What is the solution? "The hope that awareness of the importance of a healthy diet will also lead to changes in eating habits in the future," the researchers say. "At least now it seems that awareness is not enough to help address the health challenges we face. In order to bridge the gap, further action is needed by both health organizations and food manufacturers. Theirs, so that they are practical and not just at the awareness level. One thing can be said for sure, healthy food is already in our consciousness. Now we have to wait and see how long it will take for us to reach our mouths as well. "
