(ANSA) - NOWRA (AUSTRALIA), JANUARY 3 - The Australian Navy was evacuating hundreds of people trapped in Nowra, a city in the south east of the country besieged by the fire front of the arsonists, have been ravaging the country for weeks. Landing craft and military vessels are in action to recover the population crowded on the beach of Mallacoota which has fled to the seashore since the night of San Silvestro to escape the flames.
"A thousand people will have to be evacuated from this area by the afternoon," said Australian Premier Scott Morrison.
Since the fires began in September, at least 20 people have died, dozens have been reported missing and over 1,300 homes have been destroyed.
