Hollywood is still a predominantly male world, but some cracks are opening in the glass ceiling of the dream industry. The number of films directed by women who hit the box office in 2019 has hit record levels, according to a new study by the Inclusion Initiative of the University of Southern California at Annenberg released at the end of a decade-long debate on how Hollywood discriminates for the skin color, sex, sexual orientation and relaunched by Variety.
The signal is that the controversy over the gender gap has moved the waters causing real change. In the past 12 months directors such as Greta Gerwig ("Little Women"), Lorene Scafaria ("Hustlers"), Olivia Wilde ("Booksmart"), Lulu Wang ("The Farewell") and Melina Matsoukas ("Queen and Slim") have helped push the proportion of female-directed films to new heights: 10.6% of the 100 box office hits 2019 with two - "Frozen II" and "Captain Marvel" by Jennifer Lee and Anna Boden respectively - in the Top Ten.
In general, it is a leap forward compared to 2018 where the share of films directed by women had been just 4.5% in line with the percentages since 2007 when the Annenberg university began to keep accounts. "At last things move," said Stacy Smith, who co-signed the study, according to which a confluence of factors contributed to the breakthrough: from the impact of moves like #MeToo and Time's Up that shone the spotlight on hiring by the studios, the greater presence of female directors at festivals such as Sundance, on TV and on streaming platforms such as Netflix.
Until now the ratio in the top 100 had been one woman for every twenty male directors. (HANDLE).
