Over 100 billion messages were sent worldwide on WhatsApp on December 31, 2019, a new record for the messaging app. The news is reported by the site The Indian Express which underlines how, in India alone, over 20 billion messages have been sent from the chat.
"On December 31, 2019, more messages were sent than any other previous day in the ten-year history. Of the 100 billion messages sent, over 12 billion were messages with drawings," explains the company to the newspaper. Last year on New Year's Eve, WhatsApp saw the sharing of 75 billion messages, including over 13 billion images and 5 billion videos.
In 2019, text messaging was the most popular feature on WhatsApp worldwide, followed by the Status and Picture Messaging functions. Calls and voice notes were the fourth and fifth most popular chat feature. In February 2018, WhatsApp had a user base of over one and a half billion, the app has grown in several countries, including Brazil and India.
