Leipzig-Connewitz: Four arrest warrants issued after riots

Bodily harm and attacks on civil servants: four men are in custody after riots in Leipzig. A police officer is still in the hospital - it is unclear how serious his injuries are.

The Leipzig district court issued arrest warrants against three men who had been arrested on New Year's Eve during the attacks on police officers in the alternative left-wing Connewitz district.

A so-called main trial arrest warrant was issued against another accused, as a spokesman for the Saxon State Criminal Police Office (LKA) said. His case is now to be negotiated in an accelerated process.

The four suspects between the ages of 27 and 32 are accused of assaulting law enforcement officers and assault, among other things, but not attempted murder. As such, the public prosecutor classifies an attack on a 38-year-old police officer who was seriously injured in the riots at the Connewitzer Kreuz, according to the authorities. The public prosecutor and the LKA are currently investigating 13 suspects.

Meanwhile, the prosecutor's office has released new details about the attack on the 38-year-old. The unknown perpetrators had such a massive impact on body and head that the official had passed out, said Ricardo Schulz, spokesman for the prosecutor's office. In this state, the man had also come to the hospital.

Injured police officer continues in the hospital

According to the current state of the investigation, the seriously injured and two of his colleagues had their helmets ripped off, Schulz said. The death of the 38-year-old was accepted. The public prosecutor's office is based on minor motives. The man was attacked because he is a police officer. Therefore, it is investigated for attempted murder, not for attempted manslaughter.

After the operation on New Year's Day, the policeman is still in the hospital. The official will be released later in the day, said Saxony's police chief Horst Kretzschmar. The spokesman for the public prosecutor's office did not want to comment on the exact severity of the injuries. Appraisals were made. However, these are not yet available to the public prosecutor.

Media reports citing witnesses had previously caused irritation. As a result, the 38-year-old is said to have had his helmet on his head when he was transported away.

The Leipzig police had reported on New Year's morning that the 38-year-old had undergone emergency surgery. The "taz" reported on Thursday evening, citing hospital circles, that the university clinic "had expressed surprise at the police report about an 'emergency operation'". There was an operation on the official's ear cup under local anesthesia. The police deny that they have exaggerated the injuries.
