Leipzig police withdraw statement on alleged emergency surgery

The Saxon authorities are investigating an attempted murder of a police officer. The man had been operated on on New Year's Day, so far it was said. The investigators have now corrected this representation.

The Saxon police have corrected earlier information about what happened on New Year's Eve in Leipzig. Contrary to what was reported in a police report on New Year's Day, an injured police officer did not have to be emergency operated. Police spokesman Andreas Loepki told the MDR.

On New Year's Eve, according to Loepki, the state of knowledge was that an injured official had been subjected to emergency surgery. However, there was no life-threatening injury. The police now have to "put on shoes that it would certainly have been better to speak of an operative measure rather than an emergency operation," said Loepki.

The "taz" reported on Thursday evening, referring to hospital circles, that the university clinic "had expressed surprise at the police report about an 'emergency operation'". There was an operation on the official's ear cup under local anesthesia. The police initially denied that they had exaggerated the injuries.

The injured police officer is said to have had his helmet ripped from his head by unknown persons. According to Saxony's Interior Minister Roland Wöller, the 38-year-old is now feeling better; he is said to have left the hospital on Friday.

Attempted murder attempt

The Police Extremism and Terrorism Defense Center is investigating the attempted murder. The unknown perpetrators had such a massive impact on body and head that the official had passed out, said a spokesman for the prosecutor. In this state, the man had also come to the hospital.

The death of the 38-year-old was accepted. According to the prosecutor's office, it is based on minor motives. The man was attacked because he is a police officer. Therefore, it is investigated for attempted murder, not for attempted manslaughter.

On Friday morning, the Leipzig district court issued arrest warrants against three men who had been arrested on New Year's Eve. A so-called main trial arrest warrant was issued against another accused, as a spokesman for the State Criminal Police Office said. His case is to be negotiated in an accelerated process.

The four suspects between the ages of 27 and 32 are accused of assaulting law enforcement officers and assault, among other things, but not attempted murder. The public prosecutor and the LKA are currently investigating 13 suspects.
