Several young people are said to have attacked firefighters in Wolfsburg on New Year's Eve. Property damage of more than 10,000 euros was incurred in a school.

The police in Lower Saxony investigated after firefighters were attacked at a Wolfsburg school on New Year's Eve. According to the authority, cellphone videos circulating on the Internet are currently being evaluated to show the attacks.

"It was a dangerous situation," said a police spokesman. The emergency services had been called to the school in the Westhagen district due to a fire alarm. In the building, window panes had previously been destroyed and firecrackers were fired in classrooms.

The situation has escalated, probably because alcohol was involved, the spokesman said. The property damage is estimated at more than 10,000 euros. It is currently being checked whether the videos discovered on the Internet were actually recorded at the school. Mobile phone films had already been secured there on New Year's Eve.

Police, firefighters and rescue workers were attacked from a group with fireworks and light ammunition, according to the police. Nobody got hurt. The police requested assistance and seized three firearms with firework ammunition attachments.

It is investigated because of willful arson, violation of the weapons law and breach of the peace in particularly difficult cases. Three young men were temporarily taken into police custody. The investigators recorded the personal details of 31 people.

Braunschweig's police vice president Roger Faldung announced that he wanted to process the events carefully. "It is important that these acts of violence have been condemned in clear political and social feedback."
