NETFLIX

"Messiah"

In the Middle East, a young man who claims to be a divine authority gathers worshipers and works miracles. A CIA agent (Michelle Monaghan) and an Israeli homeland security agent (Tomer Sisley) seek to find out who he is and what his purpose is. This thriller around a modern messiah makes us think about belief systems and the flow of information in the age of social networks and news channels. "Messiah" is a daring and addictive series even if the plot takes some unnecessary detours.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 3.5 / 5

"Spinning out"

The creators of "Sherlock", Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, attack a new figure in popular culture: Dracula. No modern version this time, the British duo sticks to Bram Stoker's original book by situating the action at the end of the 19th century. The ambition is to replace the vampire, played by Claes Bang ("The Square", "The Affair"), in the center of the story rather than letting him wander in the shadows.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 4/5

"AJ and The Queen"

The drag-queen star of the United States, RuPaul, who has his own television competition there ("RuPaul's Drag Race", also available on Netflix in France) is the star of this series. "Grace and Frankie", season 6

Like its heroines in their seventies embodied by Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, the comedy "Grace and Frankie" defies the vagaries of time. After this sixth season, the series will end next year after the seventh.

"Into the Dark", season 2

The horrific series is back with this season 2 which takes up the principle of the first: each episode unfolds a specific plot corresponding to a party of the year: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas ... "Modern Family", seasons 1 to 10

An excellent family comedy, "Modern Family" follows the adventures of the Pritchett family: the father remarried to a woman much younger than him, the gay son and her husband who adopt a young girl, and the daughter, also married, mother of three. We always laugh over the seasons, the episodes of which are punctuated by testimonies from the protagonists facing the camera, in the French style "Do not do this, do not do that.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 4/5

Seasons 1 to 9 available on January 8 and season 10 on January 15.

"Sons of Anarchy", seasons 1 to 7

No hesitation, you have to embark on (or review) this series of bikers born from the spirit of Kurt Sutter, who had previously worked on "The Shield". From Jax, the biker with a big heart, to the women of his life, Gemma his mother and Tara his companion, all the characters are of exceptional depth and ambiguity. Even if it does not escape a few strokes of slack over the course of its wild ride, "Sons of Anarchy" remains a very large series.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 5/5

Available January 8.

"How I Met Your Mother", seasons 1 to 9

The comedy that followed “Friends” in the hearts of many fans amused us for a long time before collapsing in an ultimate season that was completely unsuccessful. We still immerse ourselves with happiness in particular for the character of Barney Stinson, brilliantly embodied by Neil Patrick Harris, with unforgettable lines.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 4/5

Available January 8.

"Prison Break", seasons 1 to 5

Unlike Netflix which only offers the four original seasons of "Prison Break", the series arrives on Amazon Prime Video with season 5 dating from 2017 (produced eight years after season 4). A breathtaking prison series at the start, “Prison Break” then lost its substance over the years. Let's be honest, only the first season is essential, the second and fifth are satisfactory, where the 3 and 4 are a disaster.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 3/5

Available January 8.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer", seasons 1 to 6

Attention, cult series! The whole generation of idol vampire slayer is back. Even if the platform announces only seasons 1 to 6 of the seven that make up the series, we revel in finding Buffy, Willow, Alex and the beautiful Angel, in this audacious production that has marked the history of television and has influenced many other series.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 5/5

Available January 8.

"Ally McBeal", seasons 1 to 5

Amazon is multiplying Proust's madeleines at the start of the year. We will thus find there the most eccentric lawyer of the series: "Ally McBeal" A luminous judicial comedy, as wacky as endearing which stages the delusions of heroin in hilarious offbeat sequences.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 4/5

Available January 8.

"Treadstone"

The literary and cinematographic saga "Jason Bourne" invests the small screen with "Treadstone". This series, named after the ultra-secret program that formatted the original hero as a murderer super spy, takes place between 1973 and today. If Bourne's name is never mentioned there, we find in "Treadstone" the spirit of films with new spies whose killer personality is awakened after being put to sleep for years. By multiplying its protagonists rather than focusing on a single hero, "Treadstone" sometimes disperses too much but remains a thrilling thriller.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 3.5 / 5

Available January 10.

"Future Man", season 2

Already available on OCS, season 2 of "Future Man" arrives for Amazon Prime subscribers. This action comedy, mixing reality and the world of video games, had amazed us since its inception. With Josh Hutcherson, one of the stars of the “Hunger Games” saga.

"Star Trek: Picard"

Seventh series located in the teeming universe "Star Trek", "Picard" will be centered on the figure of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, who was already the hero of "Star Trek: The New Generation" (1987-1994), and the four feature films that followed. She will recount events taking place two decades later. Patrick Stewart takes on the title role again.

Available on January 24 (1 episode per week). Not seen.

MYCANAL and Canal + Séries

"A Christmas Carol"

Steven Knight, the creator of "Peaky Blinders" and "Taboo" revisits the tale of Charles Dickens in a mini-series in three parts. Extrapolating from the original writings, he delivers here a particularly dark and resolutely adult version of this story on the concept of redemption. With the impeccable Guy Pearce, with features as hard as his heart of stone in the skin of Mr. Scrooge.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 3.5 / 5

Available January 6.

"The New Pope"

Three years after "The Young Pope", the filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino's series is back. Hero of the first season, Pope Pius XIII, played by Jude Law, is now in a coma after a heart attack. Finding a successor is not easy, which puts the Vatican in a difficult position. Arrival of brand in the credits: John Malkovitch.

Available January 13. Not seen.

"Shrill", season 2

An irresistible comedy which arrived a short time ago on MyCanal, "Shrill" is already coming back with its season 2, available the day after it goes online in the United States on the Hulu platform. The obese heroine Annie, on the right track of personal assertion, had seduced us over the first six episodes. This season 2 will count 8.

Available January 25. Not seen.

"Our Boys"

Hagai Levi, Israeli creator of the series "In Analysis" and "The Affair" transcribes here a news story that shook Israel and Palestine in 2014, when the kidnapping and murder of three Jewish adolescents led to a wave of violence leading to murder of a Palestinian boy. It is on the second part of the story that the series focuses, mixing fiction and real archive footage. A series as hard as it is striking despite a throbbing rhythm which will destabilize some.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 4/5

Available January 30.

"Nehama"

Presented at the Canneseries festival in April 2019, “Nehama” had shone by obtaining the interpretation prize for its actor, creator and author Reshef Levi. It embodies Guy Nehama, a father filled with five children, happy with his wife but hating his job in a high-tech company. He suffers from having to give up his humorist career in favor of his family happiness. A drama will then encourage him to try to resume his childhood dream. A touching fiction.

EDITOR'S NOTE: 3.5 / 5

Available January 30.

New serial adaptation of a work by Stephen King, which, once is not custom, promises to be successful. In this supernatural thriller, Terry Maitland (played by Jason Bateman) is an English teacher who also coaches the local baseball team.
