Golden Globes: Joaquin Phoenix, Brad Pitt, "1917" by Sam Mendes, and Quentin Tarantino big winners

British war film Sam Mendes "1917" was named Best Drama and also won Best Director

“Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” by Quentin Tarantino and “1917”, a historical drama by Sam Mendes, stood out on Sunday evening during the Golden Globes party in Los Angeles. This ceremony sets the tone for the cinematographic awards race in Hollywood, with the Oscars in sight.

Quentin Tarantino was awarded the prize for "best comedy" as well as that of the script for his film, a true ode to Hollywood in the 1960s and to the cinema of his childhood.

Brad Pitt finally received the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor but "Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood" narrowly missed the grand slam. Leonardo DiCaprio bowed to the outsider Taron Egerton, crowned "best actor in a comedy" for his role as Elton John in the biopic "Rocketman".

"1917" the other big winner

The other winner of this evening full of glitter and champagne is undoubtedly "1917", "big surprise" for its director Sam Mendes.

A historic drama devoted to the First World War, the feature was distinguished in the flagship category of best dramatic film and best director.

"1917" depicts two young British soldiers lost in this conflict and who find themselves charged with an almost impossible mission. A tour de force of achievement, the race against the clock of the two young people is turned like a long sequence shot of two hours, which obviously pleased the jury of the Association of the foreign press of Hollywood which awards the Golden Globes.

Big disappointment for Netflix

Sam Mendes won in his category against heavyweights like Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese, whose "The Irishman", a Netflix production, left empty-handed despite five nominations.

The disappointment is great for Netflix which dominated the nominations with 34 candidates in total, the streaming platform and its billions of dollars only obtained a modest Golden Globe for cinema. It is Laura Dern, crowned "best actress in a supporting role" for "Marriage Story", yet given favorite with six selections in total.

The votes for the Oscar nominations are open until Tuesday, which could encourage some members of the Academy of Cinema Arts and Sciences to consult the charts of the Golden Globes before filling out their ballot.

Last year, the 90 or so members of the Golden Globes jury had a hollow nose: all the Golden Globe award winners in the cinema category won an Oscar, with the exception of that of film music.

Joaquin Phoenix favorite for the Oscars

By that yardstick, Joaquin Phoenix consolidated his Oscar favorite spot with a Golden Globe for best actor in a dramatic film for his performance in "Joker", a strong and controversial embodiment of Batman's archenemy.

Like other stars mounted on the Golden Globes scene before him, Joaquin Phoenix used his speaking time to sound the alarm about global warming and the giant fires ravaging Australia, until the production encourages him to return the microphone by sending music…

Among actresses, Renée Zellweger was crowned best dramatic actress for her role as Judy Garland in the biopic "Judy". In the “comedy” category (unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globes make the distinction), it was the American actress of Asian origin Awkwafina who won, for her role as Billi in the film “The Farewell”, on a Chinese family united by a drama.

Already a Palme d'Or at the Cannes Festival in 2019, “Parasite” is considered one of the favorites for the Oscars, but the statutes of the Golden Globes do not allow a film in a foreign language to compete in the category of best dramas or comedies.

For television, the HBO drama series "Succession" prevailed over "The Crown" of its great competitor Netflix, who had to settle for an award for Olivia Colman and her role as Queen Elisabeth II.

Another British success, the crazy series “Fleabag” (Amazon) won the Golden Globe for best comic series. Its creator, Briton Phoebe Waller-Bridge, was also awarded for her interpretation of the title role.
