Italian soldiers left the American base in Baghdad overnight, two days under mortar fire. The newspaper La Stampa wrote it this morning, according to which the transfer from the compound "Union 3" concerned all the Italian men involved in the training operation of Iraqi security forces - about fifty carabinieri - and was decided by the General Staff of Defense in agreement with NATO leaders. The soldiers, who participate in the "NATO Mission Iraq", have not been brought back to Italy, the Turin newspaper still reports, but have been transferred to "another area, safe and not far away".
Germany will also withdraw some of its troops deployed to Iraq as part of the anti-Isis coalition. This was announced by the Berlin Ministry of Defense, in the storm following the killing by the United States of the Iranian Qods commander, Qassem Soleimani. About 30 soldiers stationed in Baghdad and Taji will be transferred to Jordan and Kuwait, a defense ministry spokesman told AFP, adding that the withdrawal "will begin soon".
