Sam Mendes with "1917", the surprise of the Golden Globe 2:45

London (CNN) - Nominations for the UK BAFTA 2020 Film Awards were announced on Tuesday, with “Joker” present in 11 categories.

The dark story of the origin of the comic book villain, starring Joaquin Phoenix, is a candidate for best film, lead actor, best adapted screenplay and best director.

Quentin Tarantino's epic Martin Scorsese movie "The Irishman" and "Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood" received 10 nominations.

Phoenix, who won a Golden Globe for best actor in a dramatic film on Sunday, joins Leonardo DiCaprio, Adam Driver, Taron Egerton and Jonathan Pryce in the lead actor category.

Jessie Buckley, Charlize Theron, Scarlett Johansson, Saoirse Ronan and Renée Zellweger - who took home the Golden Globe on Sunday - are the nominees in the main actress category.

Margot Robbie was nominated twice as a supporting actress: once for her portrayal of Sharon Tate in "Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood" and once for "Bombshell."

The awards ceremony, which is considered an important indicator for the Oscars, will take place on February 2.
