LONDON (AP) - “Joker” (“Joker”) on Tuesday topped the list of nominees for the BAFTA Awards of British cinema with 11 mentions that include best film, best actor ( Joaquin Phoenix ) and best director ( Todd Phillips ).
The mafia epic of "The Irishman" ("The Irish") by Martin Scorsese and "Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood" ("Once Upon a Time in Hollywood") by Quentin Tarantino followed closely with 10 applications each one, including the best movie. The epic of war of Sam Mendes "1917" was also nominated to the highest honor after being awarded the prize for the best drama film in the Golden Globes.
The South Korean film "Parasite" ("Parasites") also featured in the main category, in addition to competing for the prize for the best non-English language film alongside the Spanish "Pain and Glory" by Pedro Almodóvar and the French "Portrait de la jeune fille en feu ”(“ Portrait of a woman on fire ”), among others.
In addition to Phoenix, the best actor candidates are Leonardo DiCaprio , for "Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood"; Adam Driver , for "Marriage Story"; Taron Egerton, for "Rocketman", and Jonathan Pryce for "The Two Popes".
The best actress honor will be played between Jessie Buckley for "Wild Rose" ("Wild Rose: follow your own song"), Scarlett Johansson for "Marriage Story", Saoirse Ronan for "Little Women" ("Little Women"), Charlize Theron for "Bombshell" ("The Scandal") and Renee Zellweger for "Judy."
Margot Robbie received two nominations for best supporting actress, for "Bombshell" and "Once Upon a Time ... In Hollywood." And Johansson is also listed in this section by "Jojo Rabbit." Both compete with Laura Dern , for "Marriage Story"; and Florence Pugh, for "Little Women."
The best supporting actor candidates are Tom Hanks for “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”, Anthony Hopkins for “The Two Popes,” Al Pacino and Joe Pesci for “The Irishman,” and Brad Pitt for "Once Upon a Time ... In Hollywood."
The winners will be announced on February 2 at a gala in London that will feature actor and comedian Graham Norton as host.
