(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 08 - It is never easy to adapt one's life novel, and the challenge becomes even more difficult when it comes to a cult like Piccole donne. The feat has not frightened one of the most interesting actresses and directors of her generation, Greta Gerwig (already an Oscar nominee for LadyBird), who signs the seventh film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's book, published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869 (which we know as Little women and Little women grow). In the film, arriving in theaters on January 9 in 400 copies with Warner Bros, the story of the March sisters who inspired the most diverse transpositions, also for radio, theater and TV (the last adaptation for the small screen is from 2017), finds a surprising freshness and rhythm: the four protagonists emerge as modern, current and at the same time timeless heroines.
The director was assisted by a first-rate cast composed by Saoirse Ronan (formerly protagonist of Lady Bird) for the talented and nonconformist Jo; Florence Pugh for the restless and ambitious Amy; Emma Watson for the mild and judicious Meg; Eliza Scanlen, for sensitive and fragile Beth. A new idol like TimothéeChalamet enters the role of the classic 'Prince Charming' Teodore 'Laurie' Laurence. Among the cast, among others, Laura Dern for the head of the family Marmee (in the absence of her husband in the war), Meryl Streep for Zia March and Louis Garrel for Professor Friedrich Bhaer.
