A new and unidentified virus that causes severe pneumonia is spreading in Wuhan city in central China, prompting the country's authorities to shut all patients up and raise hospital readiness. The first case was discovered in Wuhan on December 12, the city health bureau says. On Monday this week, Hong Kong authorities reported that six more patients were found to have similar symptoms after returning from Wuhan, bringing the number of cases in the city to 30. Wuhan, the capital of the Hubei Province, is a major urban center with a population of more than 10 million.

Singapore and Hong Kong governments are stepping up precautionary measures following the outbreak. Hong Kong hospitals have limited hospital visitation hours and require all visitors to wear face masks. The city has also improved the airport thermal imaging system to check the temperatures of travelers coming from Wuhan. At the train station connecting the city to China, additional manpower was assigned to carry out temperature tests.

The Singapore Ministry of Health announced that it is conducting temperature tests for passengers arriving on flights from Wahan. The Taiwan Disease Control Center has asked doctors and airport closers to inform them of patients traveling to Vahan and have any symptoms. The World Health Organization says it is monitoring the situation and "is in close contact with the national authorities in China."

Chinese authorities, as they do in crisis management, are trying to stop the spread of panic by censoring the Chinese social network Weibo and blocking the hashtag #WuhanSARS. While the Chinese media is reporting the outbreak, citizens who remember the media coverage of the SARS virus still do not trust information released by their government that "no human-to-human transmission of the mysterious disease has been observed so far."
