Ice cream likes artisanal, world consumption of 16 billion

(ANSA) - ROME, JANUARY 9 - A passion that has no frontiers: artisan ice cream is a gastronomic excellence produced by 108,000 ice cream parlors in 76 different countries in the world which in 2018 generated a total turnover of 16 billion euros, with a growth of 6% compared to 2017, improving the already positive trend of the last few years. It is SIGEP, the Italian Exhibition Group artisan confectionery fair, which will be held at the Rimini exhibition center from 18 to 22 January, to quantify the success of a production on which Italy maintains its leadership in the world and that Europacelebra March 24 with Gelato Day 2020. In outlining the geography of consumption, Sigep states that 60% of the turnover is made in the Old Continent, where the main markets are concentrated due to the presence of ice cream parlors and for the consumption of homemade ice cream. Of the best European performers, Spain and Poland are the countries with the highest growth rates - 4% and 6% respectively -, with Poland confirming itself as the most dynamic market of the moment. Maè Italy continues to hold the world leadership both in terms of number of points of sale and turnover, thanks to the 39,000 ice cream parlors (10,000 specialized and 29,000 bars and pastry shops with artisan ice cream) which employ around 150,000 workers and generate a turnover of 2 , 8 billion euro, equal to about 30% of the European market. Germany follows, where there are 9,000 ice cream parlors (of which 3,300 are pure ice cream parlors): of these, about half (4,500) are ice cream parlors owned by Italians, which employ over 20,000 people, half of whom are of Italian origin.
