2020 will be crucial for women, gender equity and health: in fact, it is a year in which several anniversaries fall and important appointments are scheduled.
10 years have passed since the foundation of the UN Women, 20 years since the historic UN Security Council resolution on women, peace and security, and 25 since the Beijing Declaration. As Lancet magazine highlights in its editorial, it will be an important year to reflect, commit and act.
A commitment that starts from the fact that, as the World Economic Forum's 2020 report on the Global Gender Gap points out, based on the current situation, it will still take 99.5 years to bridge global gender differences. Despite the framework agreement adopted by 189 countries in Beijing, based on a new partnership between men and women that has the necessary condition for social justice and sustainable development in equality, no country has lived up to this commitment , and negative reactions and attacks on women's rights are growing. Suffice it to say, Lancet points out, that although much of the world's health workforce is female, those in leadership positions continue to be male. Despite the commitments made in Beijing in 1995, gender equality has also been neglected in the past 25 years by public health and development programs. The anniversary of the Beijing declaration creates, Lancet concludes, "an important window of opportunity to capture the attention of those who decide at national and global level on gender equity".
