Singer Justin Bieber announced Wednesday that he is suffering from Lyme disease and because of this he "looks like shit." So what exactly is the same disease?

Dr. Nirit Lev, director of a neurological department at Meir Medical Center, explains: "Lyme disease is an infectious disease caused by a bacterium called borelia. The bacterium is transmitted by a tiny tick that is often unaware of its very small size. The disease does not exist in Israel, but Israelis can become infected during trips abroad, for example, in Europe and the United States.

"The disease causes various manifestations: cutaneous rash in the bite area called erythema migraine. The rash can appear late and on average appears about a week after the bite. In addition, there may be fever, lymph nodes, headaches and muscle aches and joints.

In later stages, additional symptoms such as cardiac, joint, or neurological injury may occur. It is important to identify the disease because it can be treated with antibiotics effectively, "Dr. Lev explained.
