There are two hundred tunnels at risk along the entire Italian motorway network: 105 on the motorway network under concession to Aspi and 90 to other companies. This was revealed in November by the Board of Public Works with a letter sent to the firefighters and to all the public works boards. A document - of which some newspapers write today - which was acquired by the Guardia di Finanza of Genoa and according to which the tunnels over 500 meters long present dangers of accidents and collapses, are not waterproofed, have no security systems, no lanes emergency and escape routes, guide lights in case of evacuation.

In practice, all tunnels that do not comply with European Directive 54 of 2004. Among the 200 tunnels there is also Bertè, on the A26, where on December 30 two tons of cement collapsed from the vault. For this episode, the Genoa prosecutor's office opened a file against unknown persons for culpable collapse.

Investigators are trying to understand if the company was aware of the real conditions of the tunnel and if it had started to put into practice the measures for securing the infrastructure. Bertè had been checked by Spea technicians, the Atlantia controlled company that dealt with inspections and maintenance, and had been classified with the 40, a low rating that had triggered the procedure for scheduling jobs that had been listed, however, over time.
