Over 67 million French people: figures to remember from INSEE's balance sheet

2020-01-14T11:44:15.797Z

According to the balance sheet published by INSEE on Tuesday, the French population increased by 0.3% between 2018 and 2019.

The number of French continues to increase, but this growth is less significant than in previous years. According to the 2019 demographic balance sheet published on Tuesday by INSEE, France had on January 1, 2020 a more than 67 million inhabitants (67,064,000 very precisely), an increase of 0.3% compared to Last year. This is not the only lesson from this investigation. Here are the main points to remember.

An ever lower natural balance

In 2018, the natural balance, i.e. the difference between the number of births and deaths, had already reached a historically low level (+148,900 people). It continued to drop last year (+141,000) due to fewer births and more deaths. This positive natural balance remains the main factor of growth of the French population, the migratory balance being estimated in 2019 at +46,000 people.

Fertility rate has barely dropped

While the decline in the number of births continued in 2019, this trend was less pronounced. 753,000 babies were born in 2019 compared to 758,600 in 2018, a decrease of 0.7% (-1.4% in 2018). The average age at childbirth was 30.7 years compared to 29.3 years twenty years ago.

The overall fertility rate, on the other hand, has hardly changed, from 1.88 children to 1.87 children per woman. France remains the European fertility champion, ahead of Sweden and Ireland.

Life expectancy: a gap of 6 years between men and women

While the life expectancy of men at birth is 79.7 years, it is 85.6 for women. This gap of almost six years has been stable since 2015. It is the highest of all the countries of Western Europe with the exception of Portugal (6.2 years), emphasizes INSEE, while it does not is only 3.2 years in the Netherlands.

While continuing to increase, life expectancy has been growing at an increasingly low rate in recent years. “In ten years, men have gained 2 years of life expectancy and women 1.2 years. In the past five years, they have gained 0.5 years of life expectancy and women 0.2 years. ”

More PACs and fewer marriages

Stable since 2013, the number of marriages dropped slightly last year with 227,000 unions celebrated, including 6,000 between people of the same sex. For marriages between people of different sexes, the age of the newlyweds has been increasing steadily for twenty years. Women pass the ring on their finger at 36.1 years on average against 38.6 years for men.

If the figures are not yet known for the past year, 209,000 PACS (civil solidarity pacts) were concluded in 2018, 13,000 more than in 2017. The fact of being able to pacs in town hall rather than in court from November 2017 "could lead to a calendar postponement from 2017 to 2018", advises INSEE to explain this increase.

Four million children live with one parent

In addition to its traditional demographic assessment, INSEE has unveiled an unprecedented study on the family situation of minors. Of the 14 million French children under the age of 18 living in a family, 4 million (28%) thus live with only one of their parents, whether the latter is in a couple or not. Logically, this situation depends on the age of the child. 80% of children under 3 live in a so-called “traditional” family, while this rate of 60% for 15-17 year olds.
