Friday is series (and movies too). On the eve of the weekend, Le Parisien offers a selection of fictions, films, documentaries not to be missed on online video platforms. On the program this week, the long awaited return of "Sex Education", a series by Stephen King, and another by Paolo Sorrentino.

The enjoyable series: "Sex Education", season 2
Sensation of the start of 2019, the teenage comedy that talks about straight sex returns with eight new episodes. A major asset: the Frenchman Sami Outalbali ("Pride", "Les Grands") joins the team of actors and turns heads as soon as he arrives. The action of the series resumes shortly after that of season 1 when Otis, the young hero son of a sexologist, had finally discovered the pleasures of masturbation.
By continuing to stage the sexual and romantic wanderings of high school students, "Sex Education" touches us by making us laugh and allows us to broaden its subject. Secondary characters thus become more and more extensive and the problems of teenagers, between friendships and assertiveness, are explored in more depth. Only the very end left us a little hungry.

The heartbreaking melo: "Manchester by the Sea"
It is one of the most moving films of recent years. "Manchester by the Sea" tells the story of Lee, a gruff man who must return to Manchester, in the United States, after the death of his brother, and who is designated as guardian of his nephew Patrick, 16 years old. Forced to stay put, he is confronted with the ghosts of the tragic past who separated him from his wife. Tearing but sober, this drama with nuances also offers funny moments. As a crushed man, Casey Affleck is finally offered a role to his measure.

The cult series: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", seasons 1 to 7
The whole generation of idol vampire slayer is back. The seven seasons of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1997-2003) are available in full on Amazon Prime Video. We delight to find Buffy, Willow, Alex and the beautiful Angel in this audacious production that has marked the history of television and influenced many other series. Thereafter, the main interpreter, Sarah Michelle Gellar, never found a role for this measure. A new version of the series is currently being planned across the Atlantic, with the creator of the original, Joss Whedon, as producer.

The ensuing attempted assassination of Corleone will lead to a series of vengeances and violent reprisals which will upset the established order of local banditry as well as family traditions among the Corleones…

A masterpiece which would then lead to a trilogy, a great classic of American cinema, a jewel of achievement, "The Godfather" achieves a subtle mix between action film, breathless intrigue, and social, intimate chronicle, of the mafia environment New Yorker from the 1950s. Coppola, who multiplies the prowess behind the camera, also directs with masterful skill a breathtaking cast, so much so that he achieves a phenomenal film, rewarded with the Oscar for best film and that of the best actor (for Marlon Brando), and which will be a milestone in the history of the seventh art.

The pop series: "The New Pope"
After “The Young Pope” in 2016, the Italian filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino (“Il Divo”, “la Grande Bellezza”…) returns with an even more wild and pop sequel. The previous pope, Pius XIII, at once crazy, reactionary and libertarian, is in a coma. To replace him, the conclave manages to convince Sir John Brannox (John Malkovich), a moderate British aristocrat in favor of a "middle way" ... Meanwhile, two female characters who appeared in the first series saw their lives shaken up: Sofia, the communication director of the Vatican, shared between a husband with whom she maintains an extreme relationship and a great affection for Brannox, and Esther, who managed to give birth thanks to Pius XIII but lives in misery, and accepts the worst humiliations for s get out…
Uplifted, deep, talkative and rock'n'roll, "The New Pope", which offers different generics and totally astounding, amazes us. As for the actors, it's only fun: John Malkovich, 66, camped with great class a Pope John Paul III who combines serenity, aristocracy, gentleness, and doubts. And the two French women of the series, Cécile de France and Ludivine Sagnier, impress in their roles of Sofia and Esther who were very developed. A delight…

The film that is cold in the back: "Arctic"
Overgard (Mads Mikkelsen) survived the plane crash somewhere in the Arctic. Since then, he has survived near the wreck, trapped in a routine where the slightest misstep can be fatal, and tirelessly trying to contact emergency services. These arise one day, but the rescue turns to drama. Overgard then decides to leave his refuge and sink into the white desert ... Almost without dialogue, filmed in real conditions, therefore dantesque, in polar cold, "Arctic" is a cinematic tour de force that rests on Mads' shoulders Mikkelsen, from almost every shot. The suspense, constant, requires to remain attentive until the last image!

Stephen King series of the month: "The Outsider"
Television adaptation of Stephen King's novel of the same name, "The Outsider" begins with the horrific assassination of a little boy. Numerous fingerprints were found at the crime scene. The investigation, promptly conducted and supported by many witnesses, led to the rapid and public arrest of a popular baseball coach. Except that the latter, and there too many witnesses attest, was on the day of the crime far from it…
In the book as in the series, we move away from the usual universe of the master of horror, at least at first. A dark, even funereal atmosphere, which evokes more "Seven" than "That": the usual codes of the black novel are applied to the letter, before the supernatural appears.

The thrilling geopolitical thriller: "Exfiltrés"
Sylvain accompanies his wife Faustine and Noah, their 5-year-old son, to the airport. A social worker, Faustine must find a friend in Turkey and help her in a maternity hospital for a few weeks. But very quickly, Sylvain realizes that his wife lied to him and is in fact in Raqqa, in Syria, where his brother joined the ranks of the Islamic State.
When Faustine calls her saying that she would like to return to France, but is forcibly restrained, he will do everything to make her return… Inspired by a true story, "Exfiltrés" is an ambitious geopolitical thriller, sometimes complex, but very well kept. A thrilling news film, with great actors.
