A farewell to fashion shows considered by many to be premature, the one announced by Jean Paul Gaultier, considered the ex enfant terrible of French fashion, given his 67 years, few to escape the spotlight on the catwalks, too many to be considered still a "bad boy". However, the iconic designer announced on social media that the January 22nd event in Paris, scheduled at the Théâtre du Châtelet, will be his last high fashion show, after 50 years of career, specifying that he would undertake a "new project" with the his brand.
The announcement comes in the middle of the fashion weeks, on the eve of the French haute couture fashion shows. For this reason, it should be remembered that the designer who made his debut in 1970 with Pierre Cardin was a key figure in the world of international fashion, for having overturned both men's and women's clothing codes, with irony and lightness, starting from from the eighties. Author of iconic creations such as the bustier with conical cups worn by Madonna on her tours of the 1980s, since her first collections Gaultier has had the courage to mix genres, eras, popular themes and poetry. Son of an accountant, raised in Arcueil (Val-de-Marne), near Paris, the stylist began sewing with an elderly seamstress very young. In 1970, he proposed and was hired by Pierre Cardin. In 1976 he founded his brand and came to success. From 2003 to 2010 he was also creative director of Hermès. But it was his irreverent style that made him a legend. He was the first designer in 1984 to put man's skirts on, saying: "A man does not demonstrate his masculinity with his clothes, his virility is in his head". Gaultier promoted an idea of different beauty on the catwalk when it was not yet discussed, he dedicated a collection to the clothing of the Inuit and that of the Orthodox Jews.
In 2014 he closed his prêt-à-porter line, explaining that he wanted to focus only on high fashion, the same with which he had won the hearts of many celebrities, from Madonna (from the eighties) to the most recent Kylie Minogue, up to to the burlesque queen Dita Von Teese, who frequently paraded for him. Gaultier's work as a cinematographic costume designer for the costumes of The Fifth Element, by Luc Besson, Kika, by Pedro Almodovar is also noteworthy. Finally, in 2018 he presented the Fashion Freak Show, a show focused on his life that debuted at the Folies Bergère.
