Di Maio launches collegiate summits but M5S is split

A collegial summit, which holds together the different souls of the Movement and which avoids their implosion, whose risk has also ended up in the pages of the New York Times. From here to the States General, a key appointment for the history of the M5S, this will above all be Luigi Di Maio's mission. The leadership of the Movement, in any case, is destined to change shape and interpreters.

But for the leaders, the goal is to make this change as traumatic as possible, isolating those who, in the coming weeks, want to go to the clash before the appointment in mid-March. Moreover, since the General States were defined by Di Maio himself as the turning point, the factions in the Movement have been more fluid than ever and what has actually been a real congress has opened up.

With one unknown factor, above all: who will be leading the Movement of the future? Element on which, from Calabria, Di Maio certifies what the rumors of the Palazzo have evoked for days: the idea of a collegial summit that replaces the unitary figure of the leader . "The general states will serve to finally put in place a new charter of values and also a more effective organization because the political leader alone cannot do it," stresses the minister.

The identikit of this new summit will be the real puzzle on which we will concentrate inside and outside the Movement. Also because, the new faces will depend on the political direction of the Five Stars and, above all, its relationship with the Democratic Party. With a conspicuous part of the "big names" - from Stefano Patuanelli to Roberto Fico, with Beppe Grillo behind the scenes - that no longer hides the intention of a "reformist" restyling of the Movement and another part that would like the Five Stars firm on the line of the third way - between the Democratic Party and the League - already carried out in the elections of 4 March.

Much will also depend on who will join (or succeed) Di Maio, who for the rest of the day reiterated "to govern with one or the other is the same for me, I am interested in the results, I am interested in who makes me make the laws". Meanwhile, the meeting between the leader and the mayor of Turin Chiara Appendino did not go unnoticed and could also be the result of the choice of the city of Mole as the headquarters of the States General.

But nobody, of course, is exposing himself for now. "Di Maio's successor? Our leaders are the themes", underlines Danilo Toninelli. Monday, however, will already be a day of choices. Those enrolled will vote on regional facilitators and governor candidates in view of the May-June Regionals. Elena Botto (in Liguria) or Eugenio Saitta (in Sicily) were among the first to come forward as parliamentary facilitators.

But the last word will remain at the top. Just as, on the candidate for governor, the choice of the Movement will still weigh whether or not to go in alliance with the Democratic Party. And if in the Marche the choice is to run alone, in Regions like Liguria the debate is very open. In the meantime, Di Maio also takes the field in Calabria in support of Francesco Aiello. But the goal is far away. "Whatever happens, we will be in the Regional Council for the first time", is the half-full glass that Di Maio offers to militants from Lamezia Terme.

Meanwhile, the grillino staff denies the press rumors that would see Di Maio take a step back as treasurer or busy organizing a 'new Grillina thing'. "We deny the various journalistic reconstructions according to which the political leader M5s Luigi Di Maio would intend to leave the position of treasurer - completely illogical news - or start new organizational things. The political leader has always spoken of greater collegiality and, in this regard, the reference is to the new reorganization already started with the new facilitators which will serve to give new shape and strength to the 5 Star Movement, in view of the March General States ". This was underlined by the staff of the M5s leader Luigi Di Maio. "We find it equally serious that on a day so delicate and complex for Italy and the EU, committed to the Libyan dossier at the Berlin Conference, the newspapers take the opportunity to speak about the M5s and report unfounded news", he concludes.
