Number one BBC announces early farewell

(ANSA) - LONDON, JANUARY 20 - An era ends at the BBC: general manager Tony Hall has announced his resignation as head of the company for next summer after seven years at the top of the British television broadcaster.
The early departure from expectations was explained by Lord Hall himself with the need to ensure continuity of the BBC's leadership beyond 2022, when there will be a traditional mid-term review of the issuer's public license, and at least until 2027, when rewriting is expected of the code that regulates its activity (charter).
Hall has received messages of esteem from the board of directors, the government and the political world. Its announcement, however, marks a turning point for the BBC, at the center of some tension with the Tory governments in recent years, but also forced to face internal storms such as those linked to controversies and disputes over the inequality of generous compensation between men and women followed by the promise of a reform path only underway.
