New research suggests that men who consume omega-3 fatty acids may have a significant improvement in their fertility.

The study, which included data from nearly 1,700 young men in Denmark, found that consuming omega-3 fatty acids was associated with higher sperm counts, larger testes, and improved hormone levels that contribute to male fertility, according to the JAMA Network Open report. For all men to benefit from the addition of omega 3 fatty acids to their diet, the biggest impact was on those with poor sperm quality, said researchers from Southern Denmark University, Odense. "Composition of the spermatozoon membrane with rich fatty acid content is critical for proper functioning of the sperm, since It plays a critical role in fertilization, "the researchers explained.

Omega-3 fatty acids are divided into three groups: EPA and DHA, which can be found mainly in fish such as: mackerel, anchovies, herring, salmon, sardines and the like. The third group is a fatty acid called ALA, which comes from the plant which can be found in walnuts, flaxseed oil, soybeans and canola oil.

Sometimes, following dietary deficiencies, doctors or nutritionists recommend taking Omega 3 in the form of a supplement. It is also known from various studies that taking Omega 3 reduces the level of inflammation in the body and is also good for brain activity and development. One capsule of the Omega 3 supplement usually contains one gram of fish oil, containing DPA and DHA omega 3.

Higher seed quality

To examine the possibility that fish oil and other nutrients may affect male fertility, researchers contacted men who underwent physical exams as part of Denmark's military recruitment procedures. During their meetings, the men filled out a questionnaire, underwent physical examination, passed semen samples and blood samples to researchers. They were asked about their diet, whether they are taking vitamins or supplements, whether they have any known health problems, and in particular health problems in the genital area, such as hernia or sexually transmitted diseases. The men were also asked about alcohol consumption, tobacco use and marijuana, and whether their mothers smoked during pregnancy.

When the researchers analyzed the data, they found that men who consumed omega-3 supplements less than 60 days in the past three months had greater semen volume by 0.38 ml compared to those who did not take any supplements at all. Men who consumed omega-3 for 60 days or more in the same At that time, they had a greater sperm volume of 0.64 ml compared to men who did not use supplements. Similarly, compared to those who did not take supplements, the testicular volume in men who consumed fish oil less than 60 days was 0.8 ml greater than those who did not consume at all, and among those who consumed it for 60 days and above it was 1.5 ml.

Men who consumed omega-3 acids also had a higher number of seeds than those who did not take the supplements. In addition, they had higher percentages of seed that swam straight ahead, compared to those that swam circularly for example.

The new study is interesting because it examined men from the general population who were young and healthy, said Albert Salas-Hotus, a researcher at the University of Utah's Urology, Urology and IVF Unit in Salt Lake City, who wrote an editorial accompanying the new study. "Because this is an observational study, it cannot be said that there is a causal link between fish oil supplements and testicular function, so it cannot be recommended as a treatment, and yet it is a good starting point," said Salas-Hotus.
