77 cm of snow fell over a weekend in Newfoundland, a large island off the Atlantic coast of North America. The cars and driveways were buried, paralyzing traffic and highways. The inhabitants were forced to arm themselves with patience and their snow shovels to clear the roads and the alleys. The magnitude of the blizzard is such that the Minister of Defense, Harjit Saijan, mobilized 150 to 200 soldiers to contribute to the clearing already well underway by civilians. The number of soldiers could reach 300 as required.
