(ANSA) - MEXICO CITY, JANUARY 23 - Over a thousand migrants from Central America, mostly from Honduras and marching to the United States, crossed the Rio Suchiate today, which marks the border between Guatemala and Mexico. This is reported by the Mexican TV Milenio.
The crossing, made possible by the low level of the water, however tortuous, took place at the border point called 'Suchiate 2 international bridge'.
Previously an estimated group of 1,000 to 1,500 migrants had marched for 40 minutes in a procession in Guatemalan territory heading for the border post.
The participants carried placards and banners that showed determination in wanting to reach the United States and criticism for politics, which Mexico would now also encourage to bring the members of the caravans back to their country of origin.
