Rising the Wave: New restaurants in Tel Aviv that bring us sea food

Israelis, like Greeks, love food that comes from the sea. Especially if he comes from a love like the one at a diner, in the Coco Cafe and the new and promising Tel Aviv Sushi

Food originating from the sea has always been lovingly received in the eastern part of the Mediterranean. As in Greece, here, too, the fish - and in recent decades also the seafood - are an integral part of the basic menu. They can be in the form of raw fish, pickled fish, fried fish, baked fish, shrimp and calamari in tempura, and of course, seafood / seafood wrapped in seaweed alongside fresh vegetables (sushi). The Israeli palate is well adapted to all of the above - which is reflected, for example, in the relative stability of Japanese restaurants and restaurants specializing in seafood despite the simple state of the restaurant industry in Israel, and in Tel Aviv in particular, recently.

Tel Aviv's selection of restaurants specializing in fish and seafood is very large and every place that lasts more than two years has its charm. Recently, however, a number of new restaurants have been opened in the city, which we would love to see survive for as long as possible. One of them is a diner - a new Jaffa bar located in the flea market alleys. The menu is rich, the music comes too jay in position and the alcohol is high quality and not that expensive. Here you can find dishes such as Saviche Bite Morality (NIS 62), Carpaccio Artichoke (NIS 48), Fat Salad (NIS 48) and Truffle Pizza (NIS 62).

We tasted among other things a seafood mix (NIS 68) - a dish that includes calamari and fried shrimp, served with crispy sweet potato fries alongside a scoop of aioli sauce. The seafood was fresh and chewy and the sauce served alongside was excellent. We went on with salmon fillet (NIS 96) and got a big chunk of umbrella and his skin was burnt just right. The fish was served on a soft and buttery mashed potatoes alongside roasted vegetables. A simple dish that lacks some interesting twist to upgrade it - yet, pleasant and delicious.

At the Coco Cafe, a new bar-restaurant located at the door of the Coco Hotel in Dizengoff, right next to the revitalized square, we opened a table with pickled fish (NIS 61), endive salad (NIS 54) and Crispy calamari (NIS 56). The pickled fish dish is a simple yet rare and delightful dish: thin chunks of three types of pickled fish (tuna, salmon and seafood) served alongside baked potato, cream and salmon eggs. The combination of excellent fish, potato and cream creates a delightful bite to eat alongside a chilled glass of wine. The crispy calamari dish, for its part, included freshly fried calamari in spicy soy sauce which added sting and gave Calmari an interesting and unexpected twist.

From there we proceeded to seafood gnocchi (NIS 88). If you arrive at Coco Coffee and only order one serving, try the gnocchi. The little gnocchi were soft and fluffy, and together with the garlic confit, tarragon butter and fresh and juicy seafood, a dish was created that - well, no other word to describe it - lust.

The sushi sector also has innovations in the city. For example, Sushi Sushi, who recently made aliyah from Poland. This is not a premium Japanese, but a European Japanese that can satisfy and delight the palate anyway. It is located in the Akiva Weiss home - a beautiful conservation building with one large space and a smaller indoor space with an open kitchen.

We sampled there, among other things, sake teriyaki (salmon marinated in teriyaki sauce served with bok choy and fennel jam, 90 shekels) and spicy beef (roasted sirloin in sweet sauce with soy, sesame and spicy peppers, 85 shekels). Both portions were excellent: the salmon was fresh, crisp and flavorful and the juicy and tender sirloin was cut into bite-plus pieces and accompanied by a scoop sauce and was a wonderful counter to the seafood.

In short, the sea may be the same sea, but the food that has recently come to Tel Aviv displays its finest wares. Yummy.
