Earthquakes: Turkey, death toll at 21


The death toll in the magnitude 6.8 earthquake that hit the eastern Turkish province of Elazig rose to 21 while 12 hours after the earthquake, the rescuers extracted 5 people alive from the rubble, including a pregnant woman. (HANDLE)

(ANSA) - ELAZIG (TURKEY), JAN 25 - The death toll in the earthquake of magnitude 6.8 which hit the eastern Turkish province of Elazig yesterday evening has risen to 21 while at 12 hours after the earthquake the rescuers have extracted 5 people alive from the smash shops, including which a pregnant woman. The search for other survivors continues, reports the government agency for Civil Protection. At the moment, 30 people are missing. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the government is taking the necessary measures to help people affected by the earthquake. "We are close to our people," he tweeted. The earthquake struck the district of Sivrice, in the province of Elazig, around 8:55 pm local time (6:55 pm in Italy). The victims were registered in Elazig (17) and 4 in the province of Malatya, while 1,030 were injured.
