The Iranian military is in prison who on 8 January activated the anti-aircraft missile system causing the shooting down of a Ukrainian Boeing just taken off from Tehran killing 176 people on board. Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said this in an interview with the German weekly Der Spiegel. Zarif has not specified since the military was in prison.
A few days after the disaster, when Iran acknowledged its responsibility for the incident, it announced some arrests carried out in the investigation, but without providing any names or the functions performed by the people under investigation. Referring to popular protests in Iran after the Boeing shot down, Zarif said: "People were right to protest because they lost family and friends. It was an emotional reason."
