Pepsi, Pepper, Tyrion ... these dog names are a hit

2020-01-25T07:01:03.445Z

Dog owners are increasingly inspired by the world of gastronomy or TV series to find an original name for their

Lucky in 2015, Marley and Maya in 2016, Naya in 2017 or even Oslo in 2018. In the list of names given to dogs in France, the rule of the first letter, different each year according to the alphabet, is king and widely followed by the owners since its establishment in ... 1926! Last year, that of the "p", it was Perle who picked up the pompom, according to a survey conducted by the site animaux-relax.com with just over 14,500 dog owners.

There is complete freedom to find the name that best fits the personality and look of the animal. There is no obligation to respect the letter proposed by the LOF, the Book of French origins, register which lists purebred dogs. The owners do not deprive themselves by showing an overflowing imagination.

Traditional names declining

"We have observed in recent years the decline in more traditional names," note the authors of the study. This is how some amazing surnames appear in the top 20, alongside the classic Pearl, Pirate or Poupette. This is the case, for example, of Pixel (second most popular name) or Prada (8th place) in reference to the luxury clothing and leather goods brand.

An increasingly tenacious trend emerges all the same. According to another survey ( carried out between September and November 2019 and based on the analysis of two million names of dogs in the world communicated by their owners, including 25,000 in France ), this time conducted by rover.com, a platform that allows you to find a person who accepts to take care of or welcome an animal at home for a short time, inspiration comes more and more from the world of gastronomy.

"This is a French particularity that demonstrates the attachment and the very intimate and affectionate relationship that dog owners develop for their pet," observes Thomas Ginisty, business analyst at rover.com.

Tyrion in males, rather Sansa for females

This enthusiasm is reflected in the presence, in the top 20 of the most popular names, of Praline (6th), Pistachio (18th) or Cookie (20th). "Names that all refer to sweet pleasure, to gluttony which clearly translates the positive facet that many owners see in the relationship they weave with their dog", continues Thomas Ginisty. Some names even make a meteoric breakthrough.

Pepsi, in reference to the famous cola drink, exploded: +1000% between 2018 and 2019. Pepper is on these tracks (+ 750%), like Oasis (+ 380%) or Omelette (200%). This propensity to refer to gastronomy is also strong among American owners among whom Rosé (+ 183%) and other Cakes, Croissants and Cupcakes were very popular last year.

The universe of TV series or cartoons is not to be outdone to inspire the names of baptism of French dogs. Directly inspired by characters from the “Game of Thrones” series, Tyrion (+ 500%) for male dogs and Sansa (350%), for females, praise the names with the strongest progression between 2018 and 2019. Next are Pongo (“101 Dalmatians”, + 275%), Khaleesi (“GOT”, + 250%) or Oslo (“Casa de Papel”, + 206%).
