BOLOGNA - A 'personalized' hip prosthesis made on a model built with 3D printers was implanted to a 70 year old patient, who had a serious problem of aseptic mobilization and had already undergone other surgical operations, at the Sant hospital 'Anna of Ferrara. The intervention, which allowed the elderly to return to walking without pain and with full hip mobility, was performed in October by the team led by Professor Leo Massari, director of the Orthopedic Clinic of the University and Unit Orthopedics department of the Cona hospital. The operation was preceded by clinical investigations, by a CT scan that also reconstructed the area of the intervention at a three-dimensional level and by the 3D reconstruction of the altered anatomy. "Having to intervene with a reimplantation with anchoring on a residual bone, a solution not possible with the prostheses that we normally use - explained Massari - we asked for the collaboration of the bioengineers".

The orthopedists and radiologists of the Ferrara University Hospital worked in collaboration with the bioengineers of a specialized Friulian company, the 'Lima spa', to create, for the patient originally from Ferrara, the first tests of the prosthesis with printers in 3D. After a comparison with the surgeon, the final titanium alloy implant was prepared with special titanium powder technology. In all respects a prosthesis 'made to measure' for the elderly woman who, after the various operations, had a marked lack of bone in the pelvis. "For outcomes of congenital hip dislocation - added Massari - the patient underwent several operations for re-implants of the part of the prosthesis basin". It was therefore necessary to have a customized solution created precisely by professional teams. The intervention, very complex, was successful and the 70 year old has already returned to walking. "In the future - concluded the director of the Orthopedics Operative Unit - it is foreseeable that this type of intervention, with 'custom made' implants, will be carried out more frequently given the increase in patients wearing joint prostheses, in particular in the hip and knee. In this sense, interdisciplinary and inter-company collaborations will continue and will be increased - concluded Massari - with ever greater experience ".
