In 2018, snow fell in abundance over Paris and its region which had sowed a huge mess on the roads, making this February 6 the worst day of traffic jams in Ile-de-France, with a congestion of 73%.
In 2019, the black day coincides with the launch of the protest movement against the pension reform. December 6, the day after the start of the mobilization, was the most congested day of the year with more than 1,600 km of traffic jams recorded by TomTom. Or a congestion rate, that is to say of additional time spent on the roads, of 78%.
On the Paris ring road, completely saturated, the index remained systematically above the 300% mark and even reached a peak at 600% on its outside portion from 5 to 6 pm. On the A3, one of the most congested roads in the Paris region that day, a peak of 603% was recorded between 7 and 8 hours.
Translation on the road: it took an hour and six minutes, against less than ten minutes usually, to cover the last 14 kilometers before reaching the Porte de Bagnolet.
Paris is not the only city to have suffered the consequences of the strikes. If the congestion index soared 16 points in the capital last month compared to a "usual" December, it also increased by 9 points in Strasbourg, 6 points in Grenoble and Lyon, and 5 points in Marseille.
