When choosing an employer, the recommendations and experience reports of former or current employees play an increasingly important role. They know firsthand what tasks and opportunities the company offers - away from the outside appearance. The latest results of an employee survey have shown which employers in Germany were able to convince their employees of themselves.

Employees choose the best employers in 2020

For the fifth time, the job and recruiting platform Glassdoor has chosen the best employers in Germany and presented the annual Glassdoor Award. The results are based on the voluntary feedback from employees from the past twelve months on various aspects such as career opportunities, remuneration & benefits, culture & values, managers, work-life balance, recommendations, business forecast and the overall assessment of the company. The quality, quantity and consistency of company valuations also play a role in the evaluation.

The award is known internationally as the "Best Places to Work" and is awarded this year in nine countries : in Germany, the USA, Great Britain, France and Canada as well as for the first time in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Singapore.

Porsche surprisingly climbs to number one

Although the auto industry has had to deal with a lot of criticism, manufacturers are still in high demand. A total of nine companies in the top 25 - including suppliers and service providers - belong to the automotive industry. While many of them even improved in the ranking last year, most of them sagged this year. Porsche alone was able to climb the ranking - even as a re-entrant - and even grab the first place .

Infineon Technologies and Robert Bosch, on the other hand, defend their second and third place, while in sixth place Daimler at least manages to achieve its overall rating of the previous year. After 12th place last year, Audi has not even advanced to the top 25 this year. BMW (from 7 to 12) and Volkswagen (from 13 to 22) also fall behind. Neither Continental (from 10 to 17) nor MHP - A Porsche Company (from 9 to 24) match their previous year's result. The ZF Group again succeeded in returning to 11th place after not being enough for the top 25 last year.

Here you will find the 2019 ranking of the best employers in Germany.

Last year's winner SAP honored in seven countries

Last year still number one in the ranking of the best employers in Germany, SAP 2020 now secures fifth place . The Walldorf-based IT group managed the feat of being the only company besides Microsoft to be recognized in seven countries and to win in Argentina and Brazil.

But there are also newcomers to the ranking : McKinsey & Company (4th place), the European Central Bank (7th place), Siemens Healthineers (10th place), Roche (18th place) are represented for the first time. Salesforce (19th place) and Delivery Hero (21st place).

Facebook and Google: tech giants drop in ranking

The "best employers" have also done something abroad. HubSpot displaced the multiple winner Bain & Company into second place among the large US companies, while DocuSign achieved the third best overall rating. But like the automotive industry in Germany , the big tech companies are now losing popularity among employees . Only Microsoft was able to improve from 44th to 21st place, while Google slipped from 8th to 11th place and LinkedIn from 6th to 12th place.

Facebook in particular is hit hard again : from the 7th the company falls to the 23rd place. Just two years ago, the social media company took first place in the "Best Places to Work". Everyone is talking about it in the media, but Amazon, Netflix and Tesla are probably less well-known among employers. "A growing number of studies show that culture plays an important role in job decisions. It can tip the scales and even be more important than salary," says Dr. Andrew Chamberlain, Chief Economist at Glassdoor. "Managers should be guided by the numerous documents that investments in culture pay off in the long term."

Deutsche Telekom made it very close to the top 25. However, the company is making headlines with branch closings.
