Preparing children for the birth of a little brother is not a simple thing. We have often written here about the emotional preparation that children of different ages need before they become siblings, and even when everything is done perfectly - it is not an easy experience. This understanding, which is familiar to anyone who has given birth to more than one child, took one doula from Brazil to a particularly surprising business venture: making dolls for making children for birth.

Milia Simili worked for years as a community nurse in Brazil, caring for many families dealing with family expansion. When she decided to become a doula, she chose not to leave family support, but this time, instead of treating them at the clinic's offices, she purchased a sewing machine and began to sew unique dolls to help children become better acquainted with the birth process.

She started the puppet work in 2013, after moving to Australia, so she simply gave it to pregnant women who accompanied her. Since then, these handmade dolls have become a hit, and today she sells them on Etsy, for $ 130-296 for a doll and its accessories.

Now you're probably wondering why someone would pay so much money for a cloth doll, which is a good question indeed. And here's the answer: Similey's dolls are very complex, and their purpose is to explain to children how children come into the world - the whole process of giving birth, breastfeeding and carrying a baby. Thus, you can choose a doll that is suitable for vaginal birth, showing how the baby emerges from the mother's body (yes, this includes a navel and placenta), clings to the breast and breastfeeding, and how the mother carries it later in the baby carrier. There are also dedicated dolls for cesarean section, and even dolls for VBAC (normal birth after cesarean section) in case you want to leave the options open.

"While playing your children can help the baby doll give birth, vaginally or cesarean, help breastfeeding and carefully examine the placenta and umbilical cord," reads Simily's store on Etsy. Using a lovely doll ”.

The dolls, according to the official website, are recommended for children from the age of three as they contain quite a few small parts. For example, in a doll that costs $ 296 you will receive: mother doll, baby, placenta and umbilical cord, long-sleeved shirt, maternity pants, sandals, hair elastic (for birth!), Cloth carrier, underwear, cloth diaper (tetra) and diaper.

As previously mentioned, Simili initially prepared the dolls to be used as tools with the families they accompanied on the way to birth. But from there it rolled quickly. "I shared this on a Facebook group called Birth Workers, and within two hours I started getting more puppet orders," she said in an interview with CafeMom, "I was excited because it said I was moving in the right direction."

In the following years, she succeeded in joining various organizations supporting women's initiatives that want to start small businesses, and the distribution of dolls has grown. "The feedback I get from amazing families. They say their kids love it," she says. "Occasionally I get pictures of kids playing with my creations and families coming back to order extra dolls to give as a gift."
