Students of the Léonard-de-Vinci high school in Villefontaine (Isère), surprised by the extent of the controversy after Mila's remarks against Islam

At 7:30 am this Friday in front of the Léonard-de-Vinci high school in Villefontaine (Isère), the minds of high school students are still a little numb. But languages quickly untie when evoking the first name of Mila. The 16-year-old girl left this establishment in mid-January after being threatened with death threats for comments hostile to Islam posted on her Instagram account. According to the Ministry of Education, an assignment was found for him. A news that does not surprise his former comrades, eager to turn the page on this event.

Headphones screwed to the ears, Rebecca * awaits her friends on the bridge that leads to the entrance to the school. She shared her lunch table with Mila several times. " She is nice. She has always had a strong character. She claimed her homosexuality, ”she says.

Not particularly "known" in this establishment of 1200 students, the girl is described as lonely. "She had changed schools several times," says a teenager. But according to several students, Mila was not used to going out on religion, nor to anti-Islam remarks. A speech held in reaction to homophobic insults, moreover, defended Mila to several media.

"Why did she go say all this?"

Support for the girl is however timid. While some worry about his future, most condemn his media release. "She could never have returned. But even in another establishment now it has a label. What is sad is that she will always be identified with this story. She wanted to become a singer, and do The Voice in addition, ”says Élodie *.

"Why did she go say all this?" It seems obvious to me that we shouldn't throw things like that, ”exclaims Élise *, a student in first grade. "No one told him to insult anyone. She has received threats, of course. If she can't come back any more, too bad for her, ”uncompromisingly decides a second-grader. "If she had returned, she would have been killed," says another. "After what we say on social networks, it's not the same thing in real ..." tempers her friend, who describes Mila as a little "influencer".

Flooded with death threats after her video, Mila has never been able to return to her school, and has benefited since early February from "special vigilance on the part of the police," according to the Interior Ministry. “It was totally impossible for her to return to this high school given the context. We told her that if she came back we would film her getting hit, ”says lawyer Richard Malka.

For several weeks, the ministry and the rectorate have therefore been looking for a solution to return the young girl to school, in second year. "Since January 19, we finally have a serious track," continues his counsel, who confirms that the continuation of his studies will be in "an establishment" and not at home.

"We talked about blasphemy, but even the teacher did not seem to know what he was talking about"

Contacted, the ministry did not wish to provide more details. The school management also declined to comment. On the side of the parents of students, we admit that we were not engulfed in the controversy. "We already have enough problems with the baccalaureate," says a mother, on condition of anonymity. But concerns are emerging. "We haven't heard from the principal yet, so we have forwarded questions to the board this Monday," she said, including one on Mila, and on outreach on the use of social networks.

Some classmates do not hide their relief when they learn that the girl will not be reinstated. “It would have been too complicated and too sensitive. Her comments shocked, and especially the fact that she does not apologize afterwards, ”assure Alex * and Nolan *. The incident gave rise to heated discussions in class, according to the young man. The blasphemy would also have been touched upon a little, but within the establishment none of the students we met claims this right and none supports Mila in this fight. "We talked about it, but even the teacher didn't seem to know what he was talking about," he describes. "We were mainly told not to speak to journalists," laugh the boys.

* All first names have been changed.
