Many WhatsApp users were temporarily unable to send photos, videos and voice messages on Sunday. Around 20,000 users had therefore registered on the allestault.de portal alone. You didn't have to do without WhatsApp entirely - text messages were delivered as usual.
The WhatsApp malfunction was not only in Germany: worldwide, malfunctions were reported on social networks. A live world map on allestault.de made it clear that users in Central and Western Europe as well as in some Arab countries were particularly affected by the disruption.
Update, January 19, 2020, 4:38 pm: The WhatsApp error seems to have been fixed so slowly. On allestault.de, the reports of faults have declined sharply since 3 p.m. Many users also write in the comments there that WhatApp is working again in their regions. The cancellation of the disruption has not yet been officially confirmed - nothing has been known about the cause of the failure.
Update, January 19, 2020, 3:05 p.m .: The problems with WhatsApp have not yet been remedied. In the meantime, users had reported that they could use the functions again. So one user wrote: "For me it just happened again and now it didn't work again". And: "Voice messages don't work again".
Not only Germany is affected by the WhatsApp errors. WhatsApp also works only to a limited extent in other countries. That shows the fault map. Several messages from countries such as Spain and Great Britain are displayed there. A user from France reports: "France is now paralyzed. No voice message goes through. LG from Montpellier".

The error messages on the online portal allestault.de rose rapidly shortly before 12 noon. So far, over 20,000 complaints have been received. And: "Sending pictures and stickers is not working right now" or "Status and pictures have not been able to be sent here either for a while. Raum Worms". The reason for the significant restrictions is so far unclear. A WhatsApp user comments: "WhatsApp does not comment on the fault anywhere. It would be good to know how long the fault should continue".
Messages from all over Germany are listed on the fault page. Only the sending of normal text messages currently seems to be possible.

WhatsApp users in Germany must also prepare for this: Goodbye chat export! Anyone who likes to save their conversations outside of WhatsApp or share them with others will have to do without them in Germany in the future.
WhatsApp can quickly consume quite a bit of mobile data volume. Those who know the data and power guzzlers can remedy the situation.
