Berlin (dpa / tmn) - threatening, intimidating, demanding: that is the trick of fraudsters. With dubious collection letters, they try to pull the money out of consumers' pockets. As a rule, fraudulent letters can be recognized quickly.

The Federal Association of German Debt Collection Companies (BDIU) gives the following indications: The reminders are about dubious competitions or costs for erotic hotlines. The letters are teeming with misspellings. And transfers should be made abroad.

If you are unsure, you can also check whether the debt collection agency is listed in the legal services register.

The association advises that the recipients should not file an objection. The reason: Many fraudsters simply try out several addresses. If they find that one of the people you are writing to is responding, they will not calm down quickly. Crimes should therefore be reported in the event of fraud.
