Öko-Test examined a total of 30 conditioners. That is the terrifying result. The testers found dangerous substances - even with large brands.

  • Conditioners are a popular way to tame unruly hair.
  • Öko-Test has undertaken 30 rinses and examined the ingredients.
  • Some conditioners contain substances that can be harmful to the body and a well-known brand fails twice.

Dortmund - If the hair is stubborn and knotted after washing, nourishing conditioners promise the desired salvation for the hair. Massaged into the hair after washing, the conditioners promise silky shiny and combable hair. More than a third of women use the flush several times a week, as RUHR24 * reports. But be careful when buying the care product: Öko-Test has now determined that every third rinse tested contains harmful substances.

Hair is permanently stressed - rinsing is intended to contain damage

Especially in the winter months, the hair suffers from dry heating air, stormy gusts and freezing cold. But that's not all, red-hot straightening irons, curling irons and hair dryer blow the mane too. In addition there is brushing, washing and in the summer the sun and salt water.

The result is often brittle, dull hair that does everything, just not what the owner wants. In short: the head of hair goes through a lot and needs to be taken care of. According to the Öko-Test , nothing can be repaired on broken hair , because it is dead horn cells. Even if the cosmetics industry promises so much: broken is broken. However, the damage can be contained - conditioners should help.

Öko-Test takes a close look at 30 rinses - six of which contain substances of concern

Conditioners are said to give hair new shine. All sorts of ingredients help, but the layperson can often not classify them correctly. Öko-Test helps here: the consumer magazine has tested 30 hair rinses . These include some certified natural cosmetic products, private labels from drug stores, supermarkets and discounters and conditioners from major cosmetic brands.

The good news first: Almost half of the conditioners tested were rated "very good". However, six rinses with "poor" or "insufficient" failed - including well-known manufacturers. Questionable fragrances are the main problem.

Fragrances in hair conditioners can affect the body

Although fragrances in hair conditioners provide a pleasant fragrance and a great care experience (if you believe the advertising), two fragrances are particularly criticized in Öko-Test . According to the consumer magazine, lilial and artificial musk scents have no place in cosmetic products. They can harm the body. Unfortunately, they are not only found in conditioners, but also in other care products. For example, the pollutants are also in peels, as Öko-Test recently found out.

Lilial is listed in the list of ingredients as "Butylphenyl Methylpropional" and is contained in six conditioners . Animal studies have shown that this substance is harmful to reproduction. In addition, the European Union Consumer Protection Committee for Cosmetics has classified the ingredient as unsafe. Artificial musk fragrances found in five douches can accumulate in human adipose tissue and possibly even damage the liver.

Öko-Test criticizes silicones in rinses - they only have a superficial effect

Öko-Test has also identified substances that can trigger allergies. These include the fragrance hydroxycitronellal and the preservatives chlorhexidine digluconate and chloromethylisothiazolinone (CIT). CIT is known as a strong allergen and may only be used under very strict regulations - it is completely prohibited on the skin. The consumer magazine emphasizes that it is quite possible to get by without the substances. This is shown, among other things, by natural cosmetics that can preserve their products differently.

Another ingredient that Öko-Test negatively evaluates: silicones . One could call the relationship between hair and silicone a love-hate relationship. On the one hand, silicones make the hair wonderfully smooth and shiny, ensure combability and even out fragile areas. On the other hand, the silicones only have an optical effect - brittle hair is not repaired by the fabric. In addition, they can weigh down the hair and falsify color results when tinting and dyeing, because they cover the hair like a protective coat.

L'Oréal is the big loser in Öko-Test - two washes fail

Another minus point: silicones are difficult to biodegrade and pollute the environment. The substance is long-lived and finds its way into nature via the waste water. A total of 16 hair conditioners in the test use the ingredient. It doesn't have to be. Many natural products use oils and milk, silk or wheat proteins as smoothing agents and shiners.

The clear loser in the test is the well-known brand L'Oréal - two rinses by the French company fail Oeko-Test . The conditioners "Elvital Total Repair 5 Repair Conditioner" and "Fructis Oil Repair 3 Strengthening Conditioner" both contain the fragrance Lilial and also an artificial musk fragrance.

However, almost half of the rinses were rated "very good". These include natural cosmetic products and conditioners from conventional suppliers. For example, Alverde (dm) "Alverde Repair Bio-Avacodo Bio Shea Butter Conditioner" was rated "very good". No harmful substances were found in this conditioner and at 1.95 euros it is also particularly inexpensive - that pleases the hair and the wallet.

Öko-Test has tested around 100,000 products in the past few decades. These include detergents or hummus, for example. The tests are always unannounced.

For this purpose, the products are purchased anonymously and independent laboratories are commissioned to examine and evaluate them. The entire test and all test results are available from Öko-Test. (May)
