The waste war is back in Corsica

2020-02-18T05:35:49.104Z

Residents of the Viggianello landfill, in Corse-du-Sud, refuse to receive garbage from the whole island.

"Waste crisis in Corsica", season 4, episode 2. The saga of trash on the Island of Beauty could be adapted by Netflix as the twists are many. Everyone thought they had finished with the problems last November, when the prefecture authorized the operation of Viggianello 2. A landfill and sorting ecopolis that can accommodate 58,000 t of waste per year.

Only problem, on the territory of this same village located in Corse-du-Sud, north of Sartène, already exists the Viggianello 1 center. A site blocked for long months then reopened in January until the collective Valincu Lindu decided yesterday to set up a new blockade. Banners were again displayed at the entrance to the center, displaying slogans such as "We want a healthy and lasting solution" and "Viggianello = trash can aroma".

These residents have been carrying out protest actions for several years. Their claim always remains the same: the municipality of Viggianello cannot take care of all the waste on the island. This is why since yesterday only trucks from intercommunality are allowed to pass through the gates. Those from the rest of the region are blocked.

A fire in Ajaccio

To avoid the mountains of trash bags on the streets, some municipalities have decided to requisition land to store bales of waste. But between the invasion of flies and bad smells, the initiative is not unanimous. In Ajaccio (Corse-du-Sud), 50 tonnes of rubbish were simply burnt down last weekend. An investigation is underway.

Between the perpetual crisis, the eternal debate on the incinerator and sorting at source, Corsica will have to make a choice. To be continued in the next episode.
