An error can occur with the "Emerade" emergency pen. It may not be possible to activate it. The manufacturer therefore calls the product back.
Berlin (dpa) - Emergency pens for the treatment of severe allergic reactions are recalled because of an error. It's about the products "Emerade 150/300/500 micrograms solution for injection in a pre-filled pen", like the Dr. Gerhard Mann chem.-pharm. Factory announced.
The recall therefore affects all batches of "Emerade" pre-filled pens with an expiry date up to and including 10/2020. The background is that some of the pens required a greater force to activate or could not be activated.
According to the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM), patients who have been prescribed such a pen in the past 18 months should return it to a pharmacy. In order not to endanger the safety of the patients, the pens affected by the recall should only be returned after receiving an alternative product.
"However, due to the market situation, it is possible that an alternative adrenaline auto-injector is not immediately available," the Berlin State Office for Health and Social Affairs (Lageso) said in a restrictive manner. As long as no other emergency product is available, patients should carry two properly stored "Emerade" pens with them at all times and use them as directed when needed.
An anaphylactic shock can be life-threatening. Such reactions can occur in allergy sufferers, for example after a wasp sting or after eating peanuts. In such cases, the rapid administration of a pre-filled adrenaline syringe should lead to the symptoms subsiding.
According to projections by the online magazine "Apotheke Adhoc", up to 90,000 patients could be affected.
