Every now and then there is a red dot on the egg yolk, sometimes there are even several. Many remove this houndstooth, but what is it really about?
It is annoying if you want to make a fried egg and discover a red dot on or next to the egg yolk after opening. While you fiddle out this mysterious mass, the egg yolk is usually broken and time is lost. The reddish-brown spots can also be found in boiled eggs and give the most puzzles.
What is the houndstooth?
Many refer to these red spots as houndstooth because they suspect that they occur when the egg is fertilized. A rabid rooster is said to cause micro- injuries during lovemaking, which then bleed into the egg. However, these red spots can also be found in the eggs of chickens that have never come close to a rooster.
Therefore, you should not break eggs on the bowl
Red spots are actually blood
So the spots cannot be caused only by gruff roosters. Nevertheless, the red dots in the egg are blood or tissue parts . These come from the gut of the chicken and were simply trapped when the egg was formed. This could be due to a certain hereditary disposition , but also the age of the hen . The following applies here: the older the chicken, the more often there are blood stains in the egg.
Sometimes orange, sometimes yellow: this tells you the color of the egg yolk
Why are there more blood stains in brown eggs?
Experts estimate that around 15 percent of the eggs have red spots. We actually find them more often in brown eggs than in white eggs . This is not because chickens that lay brown eggs are "more vulnerable". The reason is much easier. Eggs are screened and sorted before sale if they have stains or other defects. With white eggs, the spots are much easier to spot, as their shell is more transparent than the darker brown shell. So if you want to play it safe, buy white eggs in the future .
This rule does not necessarily apply to eggs that you buy directly on the farm. It does not necessarily have to be screened and therefore white eggs with blood stains are also sold.
No eggs there? You can replace eggs with these unusual ingredients
Is a blood stain in the egg harmful?
The red dots on the egg yolk are just a blemish that is not harmful . You can still eat the egg without any health consequences. The eggs that are sorted out after they have been examined are therefore not thrown away, but processed in finished products.
