Contradictions in Iran on the number of deaths from the coronavirus

2020-02-24T15:15:46.262Z

A deputy for Qom, the most affected city, says there are 50 fatalities compared to 12 recognized by the Government

The Government of Iran faces a serious credibility crisis due to its management of the Covid-19 outbreak, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. It is no longer just the criticism of citizens on social networks. A deputy from Qom, the most affected city, said Monday that half a hundred people have died from illness for two weeks, and denounced the lack of means in hospitals. Meanwhile, the latest update from the Ministry of Health speaks of 64 infected and 12 dead in total. Iraq, Kuwait and Bahrain have also reported the first cases, all of them travelers from Iran.

"Until last night about 50 people had died due to the coronavirus and that is the responsibility of the Minister of Health because the measures taken to prevent its spread have not been effective," said Ahmad Amirabadi Farahani, deputy for Qom, quoted by the Iranian news agency ILNA Farahani made these statements after leaving the parliamentary session of questions to the head of the branch, Said Namaki, which has been held behind closed doors. "I have asked the minister to quarantine Qom and I have even argued with him because they are lying to the population," he said.

Shortly after, the Vice Minister of Health, Iraj Harirchi, rejected that figure. "If it is confirmed that even half is true, I will resign," Harirchi said during a press conference. According to official data, 21 new cases have been detected and another 4 people have died since Sunday. With them add 12 fatalities, the largest number outside of China and a very high amount compared to the 64 infected that are recognized. "At present, the situation has almost stabilized in the country, and we have managed to reduce the problem to a minimum," said Harirchi, who was accompanied by government spokesman Ali Rabiei.

Few believe it. They are accustomed to the official propaganda making up the disguised officers or directly lying to them, as they felt when last January the authorities took three days to recognize that a missile itself had mistakenly shot down a passenger plane and killed its 176 occupants. In an attempt to regain the confidence of the Iranians, the Government offers updates of the data in a daily appearance broadcast live on television. But contradictions and lack of transparency about how the coronavirus has arrived in Iran are undermining those efforts.
