It is a world record for the series of "object paintings" by Invader, the street art artist famous for his "invasions" of small mosaic figures on the streets of more than 65 cities, in 33 countries. His “Rubik Mona Lisa”, produced in 2005, went up for auction, sold for 480,200 euros on Sunday evening at Artcurial.
This Mona Lisa in Rubik's cube, assembled with nearly 300 small squares, quadrupled its estimate (which stood between 120,000 and 150,000 euros) during a sale dedicated to urban art in Paris, on the Champs -Élysées.
The painting, which reinterprets in the modern era the famous work of Leonardo da Vinci, is entirely composed with these 3D magic cubes, emblematic object of the 80s. Invader even gave a name to a current characterizing his works "paintings-objects" : "Rubikcubism".
"Rubik Mona Lisa" is the first piece in a new series of Invader (real name Franck Slama) revisiting the greatest paintings in art history: the "Rubik Master Pieces". From Édouard Manet's “Déjeuner sur l'Herbe” to Gustave Courbet's “Origine du Monde”, Invader has already reproduced various pictorial works in Rubik's cube.
Since 2005, numerous exhibitions have been devoted to the urban artist.
