The Xperia 1 has just been on the market for nine months, when Sony announces a successor to its top smartphone. Many buyers will be more interested in a new Japanese mid-range device.

Berlin (dpa / tmn) - Sony is again equipping its new top smartphone with an elongated display in 21: 9 cinema format. The OLED screen of the Xperia 1 II measures 6.5 inches like its predecessor and can display high-contrast images (HDR), as the manufacturer announces. A display bulge is missing because the front camera is placed in a narrow strip between the screen and the edge of the case.

The Xperia 1 II is Sony's first 5G smartphone. The Snapdragon 865 is used as the processor - Qualcomm's top CPU. The triple camera on the back should bring a rapid auto focus. According to the information, up to 20 photos per second can be taken at full resolution.

Optical triple zoom and new video app

The sensors behind the wide, super wide and telephoto lenses with triple optical zoom each have a resolution of twelve megapixels (MP) and are supported by a 3D depth sensor. The aperture of the wide-angle main camera is particularly bright (f 1.7). 4K HDR videos are possible at up to 60 frames per second. For filming, Sony has developed a new app called Cinema Pro.

The angular housing, aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass 6 on the front and back result in an independent design. The fingerprint scanner is integrated in the power button on the edge of the case. Sony has integrated wireless charging technology for the 4000 mAh battery. And the headphone jack that disappeared from the Xperia 1 is now back.

The flagship costs 1200 euros

Despite the memory card slot, the device comes with a protection certification (IP65 / 68) against water and dust. With 8 gigabytes (GB) of RAM, 256 GB of storage and Android 10, the 180-gram Xperia 1 II is to be launched in the second quarter for 1200 euros - in the colors black and purple.

This price is likely to be a main reason why many buyers may be more likely to look at the new mid-range smartphone Xperia 10 II, which Sony has also introduced. For 370 euros, buyers can also get a 21: 9 OLED display that is 6 inches and 150 grams in weight.

Glass and IP protection for the mid-range model

Nevertheless, the housing is also protected on both sides with Gorilla Glass 6 and overall against the ingress of dust and water (IP65 / 68) - and the finger sensor on the power button, the jack socket and a triple camera are also included. The latter also delivers 4K videos, but only the wide-angle main camera with 12 MP resolves. The other two sensors offer only eight MP.

Qualcomm's mid-range Snapdragon 665 processor provides the necessary computing power, supported by 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of expandable memory. Power is supplied by a 3600 mAh battery. Sony has planned black and white for the Xperia 10 II colors, and the second quarter of 2020 as the market launch.
