  • The jury of the trial against Weinstein is divided over the most serious charges

Harvey Weinstein has been found guilty on Monday of two of the five crimes he was accused of: first-degree sexual offense and third-degree rape. The jury's decision excuses the film producer from the charges of "predatory" sexual assault, a legal term used to explain that the crime is part of the defendant's natural behavior. These charges, for which he was not found guilty, were the most serious and for those who risked life imprisonment. The Hollywood excapatax risks up to 25 years in jail.

The few times that Weinstein, 67, has broken the silence to refer to the accusations, has defended his innocence. In the first and only criminal process since the origin of the Me Too, he pleaded not guilty to the five charges against him, alleging that sexual relations were consensual. The once acclaimed film industry character was accused of raping actress Jessica Mann in 2014 and forcing production assistant Mimi Haleyi to practice oral sex in 2006. The five charges that Weinstein faced were: one for sexual offense in first grade; two of violation, in first and third grade; and two of "predatory" sexual assault, a legal term that implies that the crime is part of the defendant's natural behavior. Four other women declared at the trial to have been victims of that behavior and about twenty witnesses supported them.

The life of Harvey Weinstein - and American society - changed in October 2017. The journalistic investigations of The New York Times and The New Yorker, which detailed the sexual abuses committed by the Hollywood giant to dozens of women, uncovered a conduct criminal propagated in the industry. The immediate response on social networks was: "Me too." Victims of sexual assaults from the most diverse corners of the world mobilized to raise awareness about this scourge giving rise to a new era, the era of the #MeToo movement. Since the first testimonies against the film producer were released, more than 90 women have broken their silence to denounce that they also suffered their abuses.

In two years, Weinstein was expelled from the Hollywood Academy, went into a center to treat his sex addiction, sold his property to finance his defense, divorced Georgina Chapman, with whom he was married 10 years, and lost all respect of the industry that one day was his master.

This trial will not be the last for Weinstein. On January 7, the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office filed four formal charges against the film producer for two sexual assaults allegedly committed in February 2013. The two alleged abuses occurred on consecutive days and in hotel rooms in the Los Angeles area. According to the district attorney, Jackey Lacey, the two alleged victims told other people at the time.
