Xbox One is the only current generation console to be backward compatible with games from previous generations of Xbox, including Xbox 360. If you have an Xbox 360 game collection, some of it may be affected, and you you can replay it without dusting your old Xbox. The process is not automatic: each backward-compatible Xbox 360 game has been checked and optimized to run on the console, with the permission of the game publisher. However the list is long, including Red Dead Redemption, all series Mass Effect and Gears of War, the first Assassin's Creed, GTA IV or even a nice range of Sega, Capcom, Konami games… For owners of an Xbox One X, Microsoft even made patches for certain games (Assassin's Creed, Sonic Generations, Red Dead Redemption, Gears of War 2 and 3…), so you can play it in 4K resolution. Xbox One backward compatibility works with both digital and disc versions of the games, so you can get a good chunk of these titles on occasion for cheap. Without further ado, here are 10 Xbox One Xbox One compatible games among our favorites.

  • How can I use Xbox One backward compatibility?

Xbox One backward compatibility requires owning one of the Xbox 360 (or original Xbox) games that Microsoft has made backward compatible with Xbox One. Not all games you own are backwards compatible with Xbox One: each game requires a process to make it compatible, as well as permission from publishers to distribute it on Xbox One. You can own the game in disc version, or have the digital version available on the Microsoft Store. For a boxed version, you must insert the disc each time you use it.

Is there an additional cost to access backward compatibility?

There is no additional cost to access Xbox One backward compatibility. If you have a game that is on the list of backward compatible games, whether in the form of a disc or in a digital version, you can play it for free on your Xbox One console.

Is an Xbox Live Gold subscription required to benefit from backward compatibility?

Xbox Live Gold membership is not required to take advantage of Xbox One backward compatibility, with the exception of online multiplayer gaming features on Xbox 360. Xbox Live Gold membership also gives you access to the Games With Gold program, with 4 free games every month, including two backward compatible games (Xbox 360 or original Xbox). You benefit from backward compatible games in the form of a final purchase.
